Commodore's Message

May 29, 2007
The major project undertaken to repair the wharf, and the construction of a breakwater has now been completed. The project was designed to protect our harbour. We now have a much safer environment for our boats, summertime activities of the members, and organizations using the premises.

We have been able to meet our target, and welcome our new members to a great year of boating. Dock space has been provided to everyone that has requested it for the first time in many years.

Our Green Committee will be making landscape changes to the property, and will be busy planting flowers, new trees and shrubs with the help of a number of volunteers. If you are interested in contributing some of your time, knowledge and energy towards this worthwhile endeavour please contact Gordon Foster. Our Green Committee has also taken on the responsibility of ensuring safe and appropriate disposal of all hazardous waste. The protection of our environment is important to us.

OPEN HOUSE:
To celebrate our 100 year anniversary, and the grand opening of the Rothesay Wharf and Breakwater at the Rothesay Yacht Club, we will be having an open house at the Club the afternoon of June 24th, 2007 from 2:00 – 5:00 p.m. A ribbon cutting ceremony will be held at 3:00 p.m. Residents of Rothesay and surrounding communities are invited to participate. Refreshments of water, soft drinks and light snacks will be served. Some members of our club will make their boats available for viewing and take visitors for a trip on the river should there be an interest to do so.

We will be having our RYC Open Race the morning of Sunday June 24th with a Skippers meeting scheduled for 10:00 a.m. The race will start at 10:30 a.m. with the last boat to be finished by 12:30 p.m.

There will be Junior Sailing and Adult Sailing lesson demonstrations and instruction in knots tying used in boating activities will be offered. We will have a raffle for a two hour sail, RYC shirts and hats as prices.

Our club members, and our guests, are asked to please bring a donation of a non-perishable food item as a contribution to the food bank. A container will be placed in the club house to receive your donation.

Thank you, and have a great safe boating year!

Dock Space Available in Rothesay, NB

RYC currently has two protected berths available to existing or new members.

Both are end-on. One is for a boat with a maximum beam of 10 feet. The second is for a boat with a maximum beam of 12 feet. Depth of water would be a minimum of 10-12 feet.

If you are interested, please contact our membership Director, Anne Kinch-Finney (h) 506 849-7611

Dock Update

A quick update from Hugh Scarth:

  • Power should be available on the docks as of this weekend (June 2nd)
  • They are going to try to have water available on "A" and "B" docks this week, somewhat depending on if members can come and help on Wednesday evening
  • There is water available on the main wharf now if you need to fill your tanks before the weekend. There are still boats being launched and masts stepped, so take that into consideration if you do plan to fill your water tanks.
  • The holding tank pump-out system is not ready but the committee is working on a plan to have it ready as soon as is possible. Stay tuned for updates.

Mast Stepper

The last status report on the Mast Stepper installation is that it will be worked on this week. Depending on other projects, there is about one-and-a-half days of work to be done on the stepper before it is ready to be tested.

If and when I receive any updates, I will let everyone know via this Blog.

River Forecast

As you can see from the pictures below, the river remains high, but should stay steady. This is from the River Watch website posted Wednesday, May 2:

"With the forecast cool and dry weather for the province, melting of the snow pack in northern areas is expected to be slow. Most interval lands and meadows along the lower St. John River and its tributaries remain water covered.

"In response to the weather so far this week, water flows and levels have been fairly steady. Based on the forecast weather, these trends are expected to continue for the forecast period. In the lower St. John River basin, water levels have leveled off and should remain steady with only minor fluctuations."

I heard last weekend that a couple of boat owners were considering launching on Friday. Does anyone know what the plans are? Looks like it would be pretty wet!

All these photo's were taken Wednesday afternoon at High Tide.
